Christmas is over again, how was it? Had a good time? Done with fine dining? Time for some real good food. Try out this typical Dutch pea soup. Normally, the soup should be thick enough to make sure your spoon can stand in it. I’m not a favour of that so I usually make it slightly less thick. Enjoy!

Btw the cooking time for this dish is 30 min but the soup needs to simmer for approx 2 hours as well. So plan enough time for that.

Ingredients for 4 liter soup.:

  • 1 celeriac
  • 1 large smoked sausage
  • 300 gr split peas
  • 400 gr pork shoulder chops
  • 250 gr bacon
  • 1 onion
  • 1 leek
  • 500 gr carrot
  • 2 liters of bouillon
  • 2 bay leaves
  • pepper

How to prepare it:

Peel and fine slice the onion. Put a large pan on the stove. Add a bit of butter or oil. Fry the onion and add the pork chops after 2 minutes. Fry the pork on both sides for a couple of minutes.

Add the bouillon, the peas and the bay leaves. Heat up the stove and boil the soup for 15 minutes. Remove the foam. Let the soup simmer for about 1 ½ hours.

In the meantime, you can cut the vegetables. Cut the carrots, leek and celeriac into bite sized pieces. Add the vegetables to the soup (after 1 ½ hours). Take out the pork chops and add the bacon and the smoked sausage to the soup. Let the soup simmer for another 45 minutes. Take out the sausage and cut the sausage and the pork chops into bite sized pieces and add them back to the soup. Add a bit of pepper if needed.
